Anesthesiology experts are trained to administer anesthetic drugs in the operating room during surgery. They evaluate patients pre-operatively to determine if they are healthy enough to tolerate these drugs during the procedure.
The anesthesiologist maintains the patient's vital life functions (i.e. heart rate, blood pressure, body temperature, and breathing) through continual monitoring and assessment during surgery.
Anesthesiology also includes the field of Pain Management, a sub-specialty which helps manage chronic (ongoing) pain in patients through the use of prescription medication, injections, or other therapeutic methods.
Anesthesiologists can become board certified in the subspecialties of Critical Care Medicine, Hospice and Pallative Medicine, Pain Medicine, Pediatric Anesthesiology and/o Sleep Medicine.
Qualifications and examinations used to become recognized as a specialist in anesthesia are established by The American Board of Anesthesiology (www.theaba.org).
The American Society of Anesthesiologists (www.asahq.org) has published Guidelines for Anesthesia Expert Witness Qualifications and Testimony.
