There are a variety of pathology subspecialties and experts.

An expert in pathology has an in depth understanding of the pathophysiological causes and effects of disease and is an important resource for diagnosing and predicting outcomes of  treatment. Pathologists perform microscopic examination of tissue specimens, cells and body fluids, and utilize clinical laboratory tests on body fluids and secretions to diagnose disease.

Experts in this sub specialty of pathology are dedicated to diagnosing disease through the science and study of cells. Samples of cells are analyzed microscopically to aid in diagnosis and treatment of diseases such as thyroid disease, cancer, and other infections and inflammatory conditions.

An expert in dermatopathology is trained in dermatology and is experienced at identifying potential causes of skin diseases at a cellular based on microscopic evaluation of a sample known as a skin biopsy. There are over a thousand known diseases of the skin, including cancer, rashes, keloids, lipoma, erythema multiforme, Steven€™s Johnson Syndrome, toxic epidermal necrolysis, hemangioma, burns, and various forms of allergic dermatitis.

Experts in neuropathology are trained to analyze samples of tissues of the nervous system microscopically and identify abnormalities and disease. Analysis of this brain or spinal cord tissue is usually performed post-mortem to diagnose neurological disorders such as dementia.

Anatomic Pathology

Pathologists who specialize in anatomic pathology have advanced training in analysis of samples of blood, bone marrow, and tissue samples obtained by fine-needle aspiration. They perform microscopic analysis through molecular pathology techniques such as polymerase chain reaction (PCR), and fluorescence in-situ hybridization (FISH), and immunohistochemical antigen/antibody tests. They utilize this information to aid in diagnosis and treatment recommendations for patients suffering from a wide variety of medical conditions, such as cancer, hematological disorders, and other illnesses.
